Creating an Angry, Volcanically Active Planet with Acrylics and Crackle Medium...

Image
Hello and a Happy New Year everyone!  For those who celebrate, I hope you had a wonderful holiday season. For today's post, I will show you how I made angry, geologically active alien planets using acrylic paints and crackle medium. These cards were so hard to photograph, and the pictures below have been manipulated a bit so you could (hopefully) see more details in the planet's surface.   I have to say, I am in LOVE with how this turned out!  You can watch the video on this too by scrolling to the bottom of this post. To start, I used a circle stencil to lightly trace partial circles onto my cards.  You can use any circle shape or even free-hand it, but I used Donna Downey's "Bubble" stencil. My next step was to paint in the partial circles with reds and orange fluid acrylics.  I didn't bother to mix or blend the colors, since I knew most of it would be covered up, but I wanted some variation in colors for those areas that did show through the crackl...

Inchies and Twinchies and Coins, Oh My!

Image
Hello, everyone!  Sorry - I couldn't resist the urge to throw in a Wizard of Oz reference.  :-) Today, I have an artist trading coin, four inchies and four twinchies to show you.  For those who don't know what these are, the "coin" is a 2.5" circle (you may also hear the term "artist trading circle", the inchies are 1" square, and twinchies are 2" square.  I do want to apologize in advance - I don't have has many in-between photos today.  I use my phone to take pictures of my projects in progress, but for some reason, the phone doesn't always save the pictures.  They just disappear.  I don't know what's going on with that, but it's getting pretty frustrating.  Anyhow...moving on... I will start with the coin - I used my 2.5" circle punch to create the circle from Canson mixed media paper. I pulled out my Distress Inks in Iced Spruce and Peacock Feathers and mushed them onto my craft mat.  I spritzed them ligh...

Proverbs - Artist Trading Cards

Image
Hello, and welcome back!  Today I am showing four artist trading cards I made with the theme of "Proverbs."  Two are mixed media and two are mostly watercolors. I didn't take pictures of these cards in process, unfortunately.  I was enjoying making these cards and just sort of...forgot.  "Turn your face to toward the sun and the shadows fall behind you. ~Maori Proverb" For this card, I put down a layer of watercolors in shades of yellow, orange, blues, greens and a bit of bright pink. I was a little worried that these colors may make mud, however, everything turned out great in the end. Once the watercolor was dry, I added some stamping with a script stamp, a Seth Apter background stamp and archival ink.  The Seth Apter stamp is that swirly circle one that you see inside the silhouette. I sketched the figure lightly with a pencil, and painted around the figure with watered down acrylic paints. For this, I used the Dina Wakley acrylics as they were m...

Watercolor Lunar Moon and Planet

Image
Hello, everyone!  I've been working hard on some trades, but I won't show what I've made just yet.  I want to until the recipients have received them before I show them to everyone else.  In the meantime, I've also been working on some watercolor artist trading cards I've made: For the Lunar Moon (as always, I make two in case I make a mistake), I started off using the Donna Downey Bubbles stencil to draw a large circle. I wet the area inside the circles, and then layers watercolors in shades of red, orange and yellow.  For the 'craters', I dabbed shades of blue and a light purple while the paint was still wet.  When it was dry, I painted in the night sky and used a clear stamp to create the tree branches across the moon.  I finished by using white gel pen to create the stars.  The process for the planet was the same, except that it's all done in watercolors with the white ink splattered around to create the stars.  Th...
